Spring Chinook on the Cowlitz River draw anglers from across the Pacific Northwest every April and May. These fish — called springers — are prized for their fight, their table quality, and the challenge of catching them on a drift boat.
Based on early WDFW forecasts and historical run timing, we expect the Cowlitz spring Chinook fishery to build through April and peak in late April through mid-May. Fish typically enter the lower river first and push upstream as the run strengthens.
We fish springers with back-trolling wrapped Kwikfish and side-drifting bait depending on water conditions. Higher flows favor back-trolling in the lower river; dropping flows open up side-drifting opportunities in classic Chinook holding water.
