Bobber fishing — float fishing — is the most productive technique for winter steelhead on Southwest Washington drift boat trips. It is visual, interactive, and effective in the glides, tailouts, and soft seams where steelhead hold.
We rig with sliding floats sized to current depth and speed, leader lengths matched to the run we are fishing, and bait presentations that stay in the strike zone through the entire drift. Cured roe, sand shrimp, and prawn are our primary baits depending on river and conditions.
The key is keeping your bait drifting naturally at the speed of the current. Too fast and fish won't commit. Too slow and your presentation drags. Your guide rows to maintain the right drift angle while you focus on watching the bobber.
